The Big One that Didn't Get Away

Kris and I spent Labor Day halibut fishing with my parents in Alaska. It was a beautiful day, and with all the rain that was forecasted, we were very lucky. By the end of the day we were all fighting to be on the sunny side of the boat. The day started off with Mom catching the first halibut, followed by me, and then it was alot of Mom and me catching all the fish, including some cod and a quill back. The guys were really annoyed but Mom and I were getting tired of constantly having to reel back in so frequently!
Finally Kris got a bit, but it turned out to be a shark. A couple of sharks later for Dad and Kris, they finally started catching some halibut too.

We all did really well this day. We were throwing back alot of okay sized halibut waiting for the bigger ones to show up. On the last halibut trip my parents took, Mom was the winner with a 65lb halibut that day. Kris and Mom were teasing each other all day as to who would win this day, and it turned out to be Kris with a nice 50lb. Aside from the good crab harvest we had, we brought in 87lbs.

Behind us in this photo is the metropolis of Coffman Cove, which boosts about 200 residents in the summer months, around 75 all year round. Directly behind us, across the street from the purple house (yes, there is a street there) is Dad's office in the "Rock House", which will be someones home soon. Dad is renting a house about a 15min walk away from town.
